I think I know what the end is! I've been feeling a little lost, because what I inititally thought was the end of the book turned out to be the middle, and stuff kept happening, things needed to be resolved, etc. etc. Now, I think I know where this is going, in a vague sort of way, at least, and I'm sure I'll find out more stuff along the way, but: Yay! Ending! I've been struggling through the bracken, and I rounded a corner, and behold! Right down the hill* there's a nice bench, a good place to stop and rest.

And I'm glad I figured out the end, because I was starting to think those thoughts, the ones where you ask yourself where the hell you're going with this, and is it even any good. OF COURSE it's not good, it's the first draft. But hopefully, there among the dross will be a framework of a story, and maybe some decent prose. I think I'm getting better as I go. I hope I'm getting better as I go.

I honestly can't wait for the rewrite. 1.) Because it will mean I have completed a novel, and I will feel good about that, and 2.) because I really like this story and these people, and I want to make them the best story and people that I am capable of, and 3.) because I really can't wait for Ben to read it.

Also, no further sign of the uninvited mammal. *fingers crossed it left the same way it came in*

*Right down the hill is further away than it may appear from this vantage point, of course.

April 14: a mere 585 words

April 15: 1169 words

yesterday: a kind of rockin' 2369 words, woo hoo

For a day or two there, I felt that I was on a calm stretch of river, with a destination an unknown distance ahead.  I was paddling like hell, but not getting very far very fast.   I had to trust that this stretch of the river was the right one, the one I was meant to be on.*  I had to trust that it would get me where I needed to go.

Last night I hit the rapids.  I went very very fast, just sliding over the water and really only using my oars to steer.  I'm pretty sure that the fact that there are rapids at all mean I'm going the right way.

*It might not be.  I might end up cutting or rewriting a lot of that particular stretch.  Just a feeling.
